Tale of the Tongs

Spirit of Place - The Irish Gathering

Commemorating of "The Gathering" of 2013, the design represents those who were forced to leave Ireland, unsure if they would be able to return. The Tale of the Tongs as it is referred, tells the story of Irish taking peat from their own fires and bringing it to the hearth of a relative or loved one, as they prepared to leave Ireland.  They would leave their tongs by the hearth in hope that they would one day return to their home land. The monument was designed as a gathering space for all those who make their return.  A series of staggered glass and stone panels draw the visitors in through the site, while honoring the families residing on the island.  It celebrates "The Gathering" by connecting the past, present, and future of Irish life.
