Revealing American Roots
National Immigration Museum
Immigration is the foundation of America. The museum was designed to embrace this concept. It is meant to lift back the earth and reveal the different cultures that make up this nation. The museum burst out of the land, lifting up towards the light, to symbolize the immigrants’ hopeful journey.
The building program is organized in a system of layers, similar to layers of dirt and soil that make up the earth’s foundation. After entering the building, a series of elevators take you to the bottom most level.
This interactive gallery is main feature of the museum. It is a place where one can discover their individual origins in the United States of America. The museum works off a private data base that is continuously growing.
Visiting immigrants are able to input their personal experiences into the database to share their stories with other museum visitors. Visitors can then print the stories of their American roots to display throughout the museum.
The museum is equipped with six “Research Theaters” that are continuously playing documentaries and first person video accounts of immigration stories. Various display screens within “The Origin Exploration Gallery” inform the visitor the time and theater location that relates to their own origin story.
