Fashion Atelier
Maison Martin Margiela
The project was to take the methods and themes from the designer studied and apply them into the design of a fashion house. The building contains both interior and exterior runways, exhibition space, workshops, apartments, a cafe, and roof-top lounge, all designed to follow Mason Martin Margiela's themes of anonymity, fragility, and adaptation.
Maison Martin Margiela is well known for being a “faceless designer”. His anonymity has allowed for the garments and designs to gain the admiration. Focusing on themes of transformation, adaptivity, and the strength of fragility, the concept of the runway building was developed. A series of linear elements move along tracks to allow for transformation of spaces as needed, a theme commonly used by the Maison. Located at the corner of Boulevard Henri IV and Boulevard Morland, the site is a meeting point for the axis of two major buildings. As to not take way from the importance of the existing buildings, the fashion house keeps its more public and communal spaces on axis with the existing building on site. This allows for a constant visual connection with the building. The private aspects of the program reside in a more enclosed area to the north of the site. To keep with the them of anonymity, the southern facade has a series of wall panels and louvers to keep those inside the building from being completely seen.

The linear language that was set in the creation of the runway continues throughout the development of the building itself. The slender block holds both the circulation and the less public features of the program, such as bathrooms, mechanical space, kitchen, etc. .
The central void is kept as an open floor plan, holding the more public areas of the program, and allowing for a visual connection to the existing library located at the back of the site.
The runway’s linear orientation and track system allows the runways, both interior and exterior, to adapt to the needs of the current fashion show.
The central doors can be opened or closed to allow for both runways to be used simultaneously.
