Beneath the Smoor

Inishturk, Ireland

smoor :  a veil of ash that extinguishes the flames of a fire, but not the embers, allowing for the fire to rekindle easily.

The project: to design both a fish farm vessel stationed at sea and a corresponding onshore welcome center, located on a small island off the coast of Connemara.  Focusing on the element of fire, and the poetics of "Beneath the Smoor", both the vessel and on shore building are meant to capture the thin "veil" that is the smoor.  The roofs and bases of both structures are meant to disappear into the surroundings, allowing for the "fire" of life inside to forever glow.
